What’s the difference between bleaching and pickling a wood floor
There are two ways to make a wood floor white (pastel). One way is to bleach the floor, after the floor is sanded to raw wood, you apply bleach to the surface. This will remove the natural color of the wood and allow you to apply a pastel or white stain to the floor, and then apply a water based finish so the color will not amber. The two main problems with this process are, first the bleach while it takes out the natural color (the wood sap) it weakens the the binding agent of the wood. And the second problem is if you ever want to go back to a more traditional color you have to sand down deeper to insure you get below the the bleached area. The other way to get a white or pastel look is to pickle the floor, after the floor is sanded to raw wood, you make a color by using a mixture of paint, paint thinner and polyurethane in the color you want. Then with each coat of finish you add some of the color coat to it to prevent the amber effect. This method doesn’t damage the wood, but it does require a lot of practice and patience.
