MY FLOOR SQUEAKS!
Hi people ask ” My floor squeaks, what can I do? ” Well unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about it. Some people have tried putting nails through the floor to stop the squeaking. But unless you get the nail to go through the floor, the subfloor and in to the joist, all you accomplished was putting holes in your floor. The reason for this is the cause of the squeak. What happens is as the house settles the support beams sink into the ground, which causes the joists to separate from the subfloor. So as you walk on the floor it moves down and up, and the boards rub against each other making the squeaking sound. Therefore the only three things that will fix the squeak for some time are as follows. The easiest way is to rub baby powder between the boards, this will work for a few weeks or months. The second option is to take up the floor, screw down the subfloor, then put down a new floor. This will work until the house settle enough to allow for a gap to form again. The finial option is to expose the bottom of the joists and drive screws through through the joists, the subfloor and into the floor, without going through the surface of the floor. But again this will only work until the house starts to settle again. So to sum it up there is no real fix for squeaks, unless you use area rugs and runners in high traffic areas to muffle the sound
